Have you ever wondered what led to a celebrity being ‘discovered’? Do you wonder if perhaps they plotted and planned for months and months, creating intricate and in-depth schemes to ensure that they were spotted and propelled to stardom?
Well, I for one believe it’s a lot more due to a little something called fate. I’m Niamh Burns. Check out what I discovered about how the big names in entertainment got big…
Justin Bieber is perhaps one of the most well known recent pop artists. Even Ed Sheeran’s getting a bit of the Bieber action with their current duet! Justin’s discovery was one of sheer luck. Record producer Scooter Braun was scouring Youtube for a singer when he fortuitously clicked on a video of baby Bieber aged twelve years old performing his little heart out with a rendition of ‘With You’ by Chris Brown.
Braun contacted Bieber at his hometown of Stanford, Ontario and persuaded him and his family to meet record label executives in Atlanta. Justin Bieber’s success has skyrocketed since his amateur cover on Youtube was discovered inadvertently by a twist of fate. He has had the career of many people’s dreams and is named one of Forbes’ most influential celebrities. He’s won over 220 awards including a Grammy, has a net worth of $265 million and has released four studio albums. The adoring fan base nickname him ‘Beliebers’ and it all started with Braun beliebering (apologies) in him!
Jennifer Lawrence is probably best known for her role as the strong and powerful Katniss Everdeen in the hit adaptions of The Hunger Games. Her in-depth portrayals of complex characters and her adorable, quirky personality has caused her to be celebrated internationally. Her films have grossed over $5.7 billion worldwide. In 2015 and 2016 she was also the highest-paid actress in the Universe!(okay, just the world)
It was a family holiday in New York that started her glittering career. A modelling agent approached her, took a snap and recorded Lawrence’s mother’s phone number. She took a screen test and pursued commercial work, landing her iconic roles like as Mystique in ‘X-Men: First Class’ and Katniss.
The world’s most recognised and most photographed supermodel (until Gigi!) models luxurious brands like Chanel and Dior, has strutted down the catwalk runway thousands of times and has her own cosmetic products.
At just fourteen years old the course of Kate Moss’s life was forever altered at JFK airport after returning home from a family trip to the Bahamas (mental note to go on a family trip more often!). Sarah Doukas (the founder of Storm Model Management) coincidentally was arriving in London from New York and noticed a young fresh-faced Kate in front of her in a queue. Whilst on the plane Sarah persuaded her brother and business partner Simon Chambers to approach Kate. When Kate said she was interested in modelling, they helped to launch her career back in London. Simples!
Model, actress, singer, producer and philanthropist, Charlize Theron is best known for her roles in ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’. As a teenager, Theron had big aspirations. At eighteen she left her home in South Africa and went to the Big Apple to model. She spent the Winter in a friend’s windowless basement apartment whilst taking ballet classes at a prestigious school. Sadly, she injured her knees and made the horrible discovery she wouldn’t be able to dance again. She sank into a horrible depression.
But Theron had an idea and turned to the film industry. She relocated to LA with a one way ticket her mother paid for. She visited a Hollywood Boulevard bank to cash the cheque sent by her mother to pay for rent (generous mum). The bank teller refused to cash it and an arguement ensued. Miracle time (okay, not walk on water miracle). Talent agent John Crosby was in the queue behind her, gave her his business card and introduced her to casting directors. Theron has won many awards including an Academy, a Golden Globe and the Silver Bear for Best (cuddly) Actress. Time magazine named her as one of top one hundred most influential people in the world in 2016. Ooh, who’s paying the rent now.
Jennifer Aniston is most known for her iconic role of the bubbly shopaholic/waitress Rachel Green in Friends, a part which she received a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. However, a moment of luck led to her gaining the ‘to die for’ role. She was miserable over her four television shows that had all failed.
While pumping some petrol into her car the head of NBC (Warren Littlefield) was at the next pump. Due to her sadness over her lack of success, she approached him and inquired if he could reassure her about her career. He did and a few months later he helped her get the Friends role. Jennifer Aniston has also starred in various other successful movies such ‘Marley & Me’’ and she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. So if you need to pump, just do it!
